Mistrust between sex workers and people outside the industry who want to "help" them means that such help often amounts to police coercion, unwanted interference, and sometimes even abuse, according to sex worker advocates. The stigmatisation of sex workers — men and women, cis and transgender, escorts, streetwalkers and masseuses — has knock-on effects that make the work more dangerous than it needs to be, says Elena Jeffreys, the co-ordinator of advocacy group Respect Inc. Credit: Alison Brown. Prostitutes are regularly charged with advertising infringements and other petty offences that would fall away if the sex industry was decriminalised, Ms Jeffreys said. That can attract a criminal penalty. Queensland sex workers can be charged for describing their services, or even their physical attributes in an ad, advocacy groups say. Credit: Angela Wylie. Ms Jeffreys said people outside the sex trade had little awareness of the two-tier system operating in the state. I think the idea was if we make it illegal it will just go away.

Introduction
Prostitution is the business or practice of engaging in sexual activity in exchange for payment. It is sometimes referred to euphemistically as "the world's oldest profession " in the English-speaking world. Prostitution occurs in a variety of forms, and its legal status varies from country to country sometimes from region to region within a given country , ranging from being an enforced or unenforced crime, to unregulated, to a regulated profession. It is one branch of the sex industry , along with pornography , stripping , and erotic dancing. Brothels are establishments specifically dedicated to prostitution. In escort prostitution , the act may take place at the client's residence or hotel room referred to as out-call , or at the escort's residence or a hotel room rented for the occasion by the escort in-call.

An Australian army captain currently serving in the Middle East has written an opinion piece requesting the defence forces allow sex workers to help soldiers 'relieve stress'. Captain Sally Williamson wrote the article for the Land Power Forum , a website run by the Australian military giving past and present servicemen and women a chance to express their thoughts and offer ideas. She begins the story by referencing past instances of the sex industry successfully integrating with armed forces and believes the 'Army could contract Australian male and female sex workers to service troops in forward operating bases and air bases. The French army employed sex workers during the first Indochina war at Dien Bien Phu, where soldiers say prostitutes worked 'not only as sex workers and lovers to soldiers, but also in tactical roles as nurses and or as companions to keep up the spirits of the troops. While Capt. Williamson notes many of their practices were 'immoral and illegal from a human rights perspective', she believes appropriately monitored and controlled sexual guidelines can help 'loneliness or prolonged absence from family, friends, partners and spouses'. Williamson also believes the Australian army could offer less drastic measures. The post, however, was met with widespread criticism, with many saying sex has no place in the defence forces. It is even harder to comprehend how it was allowed to be published,' Australian Conservatives member Bernie Gaynor weighed in.
