A man who disturbed female joggers by running naked next to them has been arrested after being tracked by an empty sweet packet. Using this information they checked CCTV footage from a local shop, from which victims could identify the man, enabling officers to make an arrest. The system is unique to Durham and offers people a chance to avoid a criminal conviction, but only if they admit their guilt and complete the programme.
Over the last few weeks, the serial flasher has been targeting women on the riverbanks in Durham City. But a discarded till receipt for a packet of Haribo found at the scene eventually helped officers trace an year-old suspect, who was arrested and has now admitted his guilt. Police believed that he was waiting for lone women, many of them joggers using the popular riverside routes, before emerging from his hidden vantage point and indecently exposing himself.
A man who has been running on the riverbanks of Durham in nothing but a pair of running shoes has been successfully caught by police, thanks to his love of Haribo. Durham police have been receiving reports about the naked man from a number of female runners since April, who had been using the riverside footpaths between Durham Rowing Club and the Maiden Castle sports complex. Police believe there may have also been a number of unreported incidents, and even sent plain clothes officers along the footpath, posing as female joggers, in an attempt to catch the offender. Yet a breakthrough came earlier this week, when officers found the spot on a disused railway bridge in which the man used to spot his victims coming. On the bridge was an empty Haribo packet, with a crumpled receipt from the nearby shop the naked runner had visited. Using CCTV footage, police were able to discover the identity of the year-old flasher. The man has since been arrested after confessing to all the offenses.
