In recent years, the fastest growing population of college students are over the age of 25 — adults who wish to advance their careers, dropped out of or never attended college, single parents, military, and those looking to better their life are all choosing higher education. Regardless of the reason for pursuing higher education, we here at Best College Reviews have compiled a ranking of the schools that help make the college dream a reality by rating what adults are looking for in a college: flexibility, transfer options, online classes, and acceptance rate. Statistics for this ranking were gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics and Peterson's. The motto of Troy University is to "Educate the mind to think, the heart to feel, and the body to act.

We offer adults a second chance at education thanks to our 8-month adult literacy program. Our priority is to ensure students can read, write and do basic calculations by the end of the program. Once the course is complete, we encourage students to attend our vocational training program where they can learn trades such as weaving and tailoring as well as other programs run by the government or other NGOs. In turn, these adult students are frequently motivated to send their children to Friendship schools. The adult literacy program is conducted over 8 months. Students learn to read and write, and to apply this knowledge in their daily lives. Under the adult numeracy program, adults and adolescents learn about numbers and arithmetic so that they can keep track of their own financial matters, such as wages and market transactions.
Adult education , distinct from child education , is a practice in which adults engage in systematic and sustained self-educating activities in order to gain new forms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values. In particular, adult education reflects a specific philosophy about learning and teaching based on the assumption that adults can and want to learn, that they are able and willing to take responsibility for that learning, and that the learning itself should respond to their needs. Driven by what one needs or wants to learn, the available opportunities, and the manner in which one learns, adult learning is affected by demographics, globalization and technology. The World Bank 's World Development Report on The Changing Nature of Work argues that adult learning is an important channel to help readjust workers' skills to fit in the future of work and suggests ways to improve its effectiveness. Educating adults differs from educating children in several ways given that adults have accumulated knowledge and work experience which can add to the learning experience. The science and art of helping adults learn, the practice of adult education is referred to as Andragogy , to distinguish it from the traditional school-based education for children pedagogy. Unlike children, adults are seen as more self-directed, rather than relying on others for help. Adults are mature and therefore have knowledge and have gained life experiences which provide them a foundation of learning. An adult's readiness to learn is linked to their need to have the information.
