With a home in downtown Chicago and a young son in school, the couple needed to find work and had no desire to leave the city they call home. It gives them hope, it keeps them working. Even if they stop at twenty-five, they can say they did everything for themselves and their career. The Studebaker gives Kremnev a unique stage for his vision: one large enough to put up a spectacle of scenic design, costumes, lighting and an ample floor for a massive cast, while intimate enough a house to afford every audience member a view of facial expressions and movement nuances without use of opera glasses. Doing the math on this and imagining the rehearsal schedule boggles the mind.

Part of the challenge with the creation and performance of holiday classics is how to keep them fresh and interesting and entertaining, and yet preserve the essential spirit of the pieces that continue the traditions of the holiday. What results is a gorgeous and thematically fitting reinterpretation, hopefully destined to stake its claim among the legion of Nutcrackers presented every December. By uniting their present students with many of their former students who are now professional dancers, Kremnev and Reznik introduce a level of consistency and artistry equal to that of other established ballet companies across the country. While the dozens of the younger dancers perform adorably as you might expect, several of the professional dancers give exemplary performances. The real stars of this show are the young members of the cast who dance their way through this Christmas tale with talent and promise. This Nutcracker is a show for young and old, with lots of fun, frivolity, and color. It is a particularly good show for children as it is very fast moving, full of color and keeps the audience fully engaged and entertained throughout. The Studebaker is an intimate theater with only seats, but this is a large production nonetheless with people on the stage at one time. Ballet can be both serious and silly and this is the case in this production. The stage set includes deep, rich colors in the backdrop with some convincing rain and snow. The first act includes a great performance by Clara, performed by Grace Curry. Her dancing was elegant and exacting throughout the entire evening. The Maid, danced by Elizabeth Chapa, was a new character for this reviewer and she added some fun to the Party Scene. The dance of Devil by Carol Dilts was a new addition and a scary one at that.
